I grew up in Krugersdorp, but my connection has always been with the wild. The turning point came at Limpopo Field Guiding Academy, where I trained in conservation, tracking, and guiding, skills that shaped my passion into a profession.
My love for nature began with my family. My dad, Leon Gildenhuys, often took my mom and me on trips through the Waterberg, Kruger, and Pilanesberg, and those early adventures opened my eyes to the wonder of the bush. My uncle, Andre “Oom Ouboet” Gildenhuys, and my brother, Deon van der Lith, both respected guides, also played a major role in inspiring me to follow this path. Their experience and commitment to the wild set the example I strive to follow today.
One of my most defining experiences happened during dangerous game week at the academy. Our group, led by our instructor, Val, faced a black rhino charge together. Feeling the power and presence of such an animal was humbling, and Val’s guidance in that moment taught us respect, caution, and confidence in the bush.
I’m particularly drawn to reptiles, especially crocodiles. They’re ancient predators, perfectly adapted and covered in tiny touch receptors from snout to tail, allowing them to detect the faintest vibrations around them. I also admire the Shepherd’s Tree, a symbol of resilience, thriving in arid conditions and standing strong where many others cannot.
For me, guiding is more than a career, it’s a commitment to understanding nature on every level, from the quietest moment to the most powerful encounter.
