I never planned to become a nature guide, I actually studied commerce in school and hoped to pursue business management. But when funding wasn’t available after high school, life took a different path. In 2013, I was offered a government-funded learnership through Rupert Beiber, then CEO of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. I applied for the Nature Guide programme, one of four options, and was selected. Within just three months, I knew I had found my true calling.

Over a decade later, the bush has become more than a workplace, it’s a classroom full of unseen details and quiet lessons. I’m fascinated by the smaller creatures, like dung beetles, and the essential role they play. They clean the landscape, bury organic matter underground, and enrich the soil, which then feeds everything from tiny mammals to the African giant, the elephant.

For me, guiding is not just about sightings, it’s about understanding the invisible connections that keep the wilderness alive.
